Healthcare In Frisco, TX: How To Stay Healthy This Winter

Published by Frisco TX Doctor on

Healthcare Frisco TXYour winter time healthcare in Frisco, TX isn’t just about seeing your doctor when you’re sick, it’s also about preventing health problems before they start.  There are a number of ways that you can stay physically and mentally healthy this winter so that you can spend more time enjoying holiday parties and family get-togethers and less time in your doctor’s waiting room.

Boost Your Vitamin D Levels

There’s always a new drug or supplement in the news or on the drugstore shelves that promises to work health miracles, but most end up forgotten because they don’t deliver on their promises.  Vitamin D isn’t one of those.  Vitamin D benefits your heart, your skin, your immune system, your mental health and can lower your risk of certain types of cancers, like breast, colorectal, prostate and ovarian.  While you can take supplements to boost your Vitamin D levels, you can also try losing just 5% of your body weight, exercising and eating more fatty fish, like wild salmon.

Protect Your Skin

Skin cancer rates have been rising steadily in the United States and one of the most effective ways of preventing all types of skin cancer is the liberal use of sunscreen.  It’s especially important to remember to use sunscreen in the winter time because we think we’re getting less sun exposure just because it’s cold outside, even though our sun exposure is the same as it is during the summer.  Sunscreen can protect against ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) light, both of which have the potential to cause skin cancer.

Get A Flu Shot

If you’re one of those people who doesn’t get a yearly flu shot because you have a fear of needles, think about the week, two weeks or more you could be out of commission if you get the flu.  And, if you don’t really care whether or not you get the flu, think about your friends, neighbors and all of those anonymous people, including children and the elderly, you could be contaminating if you do get the flu.  Think of it as your random act of kindness this winter.

Get Out Of The House

We live in Texas, not Alaska, so our winters aren’t as dark and prolonged as they could be.  However, that doesn’t mean that the cold weather can’t take a toll on our mental health.  If you find that the dark winter months get you down, take a yoga class, call up friends for shopping outings or host football-watching parties.  Connecting with other people can make you feel better and stay healthier.
